Home / When to Stay / July in Cornwall
The summer holidays have just begun, the temperatures are soaring and the waves are crashing onto the Cornish coast. July is one of the most popular times to visit, with its white sandy coves appearing Mediterranean in the midsummer heat. Paddle in the warm waters, try your hand at watersports or peel back shells of flame grilled prawns in the sunshine. What better way to start your summer holidays than at a retreat just moments from the beach?
Walk the South West Coast Path
Head to any beach in Cornwall, turn left or right and you’ll be on the South West Coast Path. The county is bordered by miles of dramatic cliff path, taking you past sweeping vistas, secret coves, naturally formed sea pools and ancient tin mines. Simply pack a picnic and stride out on one of the many circular walks that can be enjoyed. Throughout July the weather is mild, making it the perfect time to explore new places in the sunshine.
Take a surf lesson
Watch the pros from the shoreline or give it a go yourself with one of Cornwall’s many watersports schools. Hear the thud of your heart as you dive under the water and feel the adrenalin rush as you stand up on your surfboard for the first time- there’s no feeling like it. Watergate Bay’s Extreme Academy offers surfing, kitesurfing and SUP lessons and hire among others. Or try King Surf at Mawgan Porth, St Ives Surf School on Porthmeor Beach, Newquay Activity Centre, and Sennen Surfing Centre on Sennen cove.
Minack Theatre
Experience Cornwall like no other with a theatrical show under the stars. The Minack Theatre, situated next door to the famous Porthcurno Beach, is perched on the cliffs high above the Atlantic ocean. Enjoy a day visit with storytelling for little ones, or an evening show lit up by the moonlight. The nearby beach is also a sight to behold, and you can dine cliff-high in the Minack café. See a list of events here.
Family fun
Grab a bucket and spade and head to your nearest beach for a day on the sand. Cornwall’s beaches are a kid’s dream playground, with maps of rockpools to navigate, acres of sand to run across, dig up and build on, and the endless foamy sea for paddling and wave jumping. However, the fun goes beyond just the beach. Cornwall has an abundance of family attractions for you to explore throughout the summer. Soar sky high at Flambards Theme Park, marvel at spiky cacti and giant biomes at the Eden Project, or visit seal pups at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. There’s endless places to visit with little ones in tow.
