Widemouth Bay residents and owners of Black Rock Café, surf hire and beach facilities, Mark and Helen La Broy on surfing, sunsets and a strong beach community
Widemouth Bay is a small village with a strong local community. Surfing, days on the beach and gentle coastal walks is what Widemouth Bay is all about.
What really stands out is the panoramic sunsets here – they’re as good as they get! But also the unexpected versatility of the beach. It’s dog friendly all year on Black Rock, with dog restrictions on the northern end of Widemouth. There’s always sand, and a sense of space on the beach too, even in the height of summer, which can’t always be found on Cornish beaches.
My recommended day out is making the most of the beach basics here: rent boards for family fun and then some rock-pooling around Black Rock – a firm favourite among visitors. The other beach basic is to come prepared. Remember to bring a coat, we can’t guarantee the sunshine!
For us, our ideal day spent at the bay begins with breakfast at the café, enjoying hours on the beach with the kids and our dogs, before finishing up with a barbecue and beers as the sun goes down.
Further afield, the coast path from Black Rock to Crackington Haven is incredible. It is a strenuous walk but never busy, despite the breathtaking views you get of the untouched coastline. That makes every step worth the effort.
