Praa Sands, Cornwall
From £1001 p/w
Take the footpath direct from Acton Castle to the coast and coves, some 200 metres.
The coastal views from the roof terrace of this 18th century castle.
Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by secluded, rocky coves, Acton Castle stands proud on the cliffs over Mount's Bay. The nearest rocky cove is 200 metres in front while Praa Sands, Prussia Cove and Perranuthnoe are further afield.
Prussia Cove is between St Michael's Mount, Marazion, and the Lizard Peninsula. The picturesque cove sits on the eastern flank of Cudden Point. The dramatic coastline of Prussia Cove is made-up of three smaller coves called Piskies, Bessy's and Kings. The smaller beaches of pale gold sand, sheltered by the cliffs, offer the perfect spot for rockpooling and bathing at low tide.
Climb the stile at the bottom of your garden and cross the field, and you will find yourself on the South West coast path. Eyes towards the sea, head left for a twenty-minute shoreline stroll towards Prussia Cove, passing the rugged Cudden Point and mystical Piskies Cove as you go. Alternatively, head right for the beachside village of Perranuthanoe, home to a sea facing café and gastro-pub the Victoria Inn where you can take a break from your walk with a well-deserved crab sandwich.
For a day in the waves, drive the short distance to Praa Sands, a lifeguarded beach which has that special seaside buzz.
Built in 1775 as a country house, Acton Castle offers commanding views over Mount's Bay. The now Grade II special listed building, was created by John Stackhouse, an enthusiastic marine biologist. Stackhouse wanted a gentleman's retreat where he could carry out his botany. The scientist commissioned architect John Wood the Younger, who at the time, recently completed designs for the world famous Royal Crescent in Bath.
Cornwall's most famous real-life smuggler John Cater, The King of Prussia, is known to have rented a farm at Acton Castle, and for a time, was the building's caretaker. When Stackhouse was not at the property, Cater took advantage of the empty space and used it as a hideout. Old Cornish tales say that smuggler's tunnels run from the castle to the coast although they have never been found.
The Tower is a large Grade II special listed, duplex apartment, occupying the top two floors of Acton Castle plus a large private rooftop terrace with 360 views. Think large bedrooms with sea views, a sumptuous and complete refurbishment to match the grandeur of the building, matched to a hi-spec kitchen and bathrooms.
