Staff pick of the month: The Croft, Coverack

Welcome back to our staff pick of the month series, where we ask members of the team about their favourite Beach Retreats property. This month we speak to Portfolio Manager Ashleigh Allwood about her chosen retreat, The Croft in Coverack.

I’m Ashleigh, the Portfolio Manager for West and South Cornwall. I moved to Cornwall just over seven years ago and now live in St Erth, Hayle with my partner and dog, Ronnie. I have spent the past year and half renovating my home, after buying at auction during the midst of the Cornwall property boom. I love nothing more than exploring everything the county has to offer and feel so lucky to be able to call Cornwall my home.

My chosen retreat is The Croft, a decadent and stunning retreat overlooking the ocean in Coverack, a small cove in the remote Lizard Peninsula.

Check out more of what West Cornwall has to offer and explore our holiday lets in The Lizard Peninsula.

What is it you like most about this property?

There are so many things to love about this property; the quality interiors, the generous sized rooms, the beautiful characterful features… but for me it’s the position. Nestled on the shoreline with access to its own private beach is what makes The Croft so special. You instantly feel a sense of calm as you walk into the property, with seemingly endless vistas of the sea from almost every room.

Fancy staying in a different holiday retreat with a log burner? Check out our cottages with a log burner for a cosy getaway.

What will be your favourite part of the day when staying at this retreat?

This would have to be in the morning. Coverack is a bustling town during the day when visitors and beachgoers arrive late morning, but the early morning hours around sunrise are so peaceful and quiet here. Being situated on the south coast means the sea is often very calm and you’re treated to some sensational sunrises, all of which can be admired from the sanctuary of The Croft.

What is it that you like about the local area?

There’s so much to explore around Coverack and The Lizard peninsula. As someone who loves hiking with my dog it provides endless footpaths and trails to discover. The coastline is rugged but enchanting, dotted with beaches and quiet coves, many of which are only accessible from the water. The sea here is a haven for divers, snorkellers, kayakers and paddle boarders, so there’s plenty of activities to choose from.

Discover our top 7 must-dos in Falmouth, from exploring historic sites to enjoying the vibrant local culture and stunning coastal scenery.

What’s the nearest beach like and how far is the walk?

The Croft has access to its very own stretch of private beach, which adjoins the main beach at Coverack. The winding path from the property leads you down through the garden on to some stone steps, which give you access to the beach. The sea here is generally very calm, making it a great spot for swimming and paddle boarding. After a chilly dip you can wash off and sink into the bubbling hot tub to warm up.

Is there a particular restaurant in the area that you would choose to eat at?

There are plenty! Like most of Cornwall, the Lizard peninsula offers some fantastic restaurants and cafes. My all time favourite place is Jumunjy – an authentic Thai restaurant situated in Cury Cross Lanes. The restaurant used to be a former post office, but has been extensively renovated by the current owners to create a simply unique dining experience. Stepping through the doors is like entering a Thai jungle, the décor alone is an experience you don’t want to miss out on. The food here is amazing and uses locally sourced meat, fish and vegetables. The staff are also really helpful in giving advice based on your food preferences if you’re not familiar with some of the Thai dishes. It’s a must visit!

Can you catch a good sunset or sunrise here?

Sunrise! From the private beach, in the hot tub, on the patio with a cup of tea or whilst lying in bed with the doors wide open – there are so many spots to enjoy a sunrise here.

What would you say is a must-see or do in this area?

Take advantage of all the watersports activities on offer in the bay, as there’s so much to choose from. For those who don’t like getting their feet wet, then exploring the rugged coastal paths is a must! Kynance Cove is only a short drive away and is a great place to spend the afternoon, though I would recommend visiting this out of season where possible as it does get very busy. Ensure you check the tide times and only visit at low tide. For those that enjoy surfing and hot chocolates, the beach at Poldhu usually has some decent waves and the café on the beach serves quite possibly the best hot chocolate in Cornwall!

Staff pick of the month: Sea View, Crantock

Our new series, Staff pick of the month, asks members of the team about their favourite Beach Retreats property. This month we speak to Guest Experience Manager, Victoria Allen.

Her chosen retreat is Sea View, a beautiful and calming coastal retreat overlooking the sea in Crantock, north Cornwall.

What is it you like most about this property?

Apart from the obvious location, it has to be the huge garden for the little ones and dogs to play in.

And the décor – the pastel colours, white washed wood and painted panelling. It’s got a cottage feel, but bright and modern still.

What will be your favourite part of the day when staying at this retreat?

The evening – dinner with the whole family followed by games. That’s what the long table in the upstairs open plan room is for right?

What is it that you like about the local area?

The coastline. This retreat is so close to Polly Joke beach, a lesser-known gem in the Crantock area. You can also walk all the way round to the River Gannel, a great spot for paddleboarding.

Embark on a scenic walk from Crantock to a mystery location, discovering hidden gems and stunning vistas along Cornwall’s coastline.

What’s the nearest beach like and how far is the walk?

Crantock beach – When the tide is out I love going for stroll across the wide beach. The side closest to the Gannel is perfect for a family BBQ too.

Want to stay in Crantock, Newquay near to Fistral and Watergate? Have a look at our properties in Crantock.

Polly Joke beach – A little hideaway beach! Usually warm as it is covered from wind too. The next cove on is home to seals, sometimes if you’re lucky you can spot one bobbing around in the sea or sleeping on their beach.

It is a steep hill down to the beach but worth it! You can also follow the coastal path around the headland which then offers you views overlooking Polly Joke and Crantock beach!

Is there a particular restaurant in the area that you would choose to eat at?

Jam Jar Kitchen. Hot chocolates (I don’t drink coffee) and delicious homemade cakes in the day and amazing sourdough pizzas in the evening.

All enjoyed alfresco in the beautifully decorated courtyard. Or you can take your coffee and cake to go and enjoy on the beach instead.

The Cornishman is a great traditional pub in the heart of the village. You can tuck into pub grub or just enjoy a drink.

Can you catch a good sunset or sunrise here?

It’s all about the orange and pink sunsets. Sitting on the sea facing balcony as the sun goes down would be a dream.

What would you say is a must-see or do in this area?

The best way to see this area is to put on your walking boots.
Cubert Common or Penpol creek circular for wildlife and bird spotting. Coastal path for stunning views, hidden coves and finding seals bobbing around in the sea. Or just walk into neighbouring villages and towns – Newquay and Hollywell.

Sea View sleeps 10, see the full details here.

Drink at The Ship Inn

This traditional, 17th-century pub feels like you’re stepping back in time – that is, until you sample their fresh, modern menu. With traditional pub décor and an excellent view of the harbour, this cosy pub is made for whiling away the day sipping your pint of choice and admiring the harbour activity. Spot seabirds in the summer or hide from the storms in the winter, which often see waves crashing over the harbour walls. This old fisherman’s haunt is the best place in Porthleven to eat, drink and relax, no matter the weather.

Eat fish and chips at the harbour

Tuck into the freshest caught fish, battered to perfection and adorned with as much salt and vinegar as you like. Fish and chips are best enjoyed right by the sea, and Porthleven’s harbour wall is an ideal spot for soaking up the bustling atmosphere as you eat. Head to Porthleven Fish and Chips or The Top Chippy to get your fix. Just watch out for hungry seagulls!

Wild swimming

Porthleven has many sheltered spots for a dip to cool off in the summer months, or, if you’re brave, during winter. Wait for high tide and head in off the harbour slipway, when the fishing boats will be far out to sea and you can enjoy a calm pool to splash about in. Or, head to Porthleven beach to get your fix of the vast Atlantic ocean – lifeguards patrol here in the summer months, making it the safest choice.

Dine at Kota

Kota means ‘shellfish’ in Maori, and you may recognise head chef Jude, who is half Maori, half Chinese Malay, from his appearance on BBC’s Great British Menu. Kota serves up the finest of local produce with a signature Asian twist, and is the ultimate fine dining experience in the area. Expect tempura oysters, crispy monkfish and seasonal greens in seaweed butter, enjoyed with handpicked wine pairings. It’s a must visit.

Watch the sunset at Rinsey Head

Enjoy panoramic views of the Lizard and Land’s End and soak up a kaleidoscopic sunset at Rinsey Head, which you can reach in a circular walk along the coast path. This walk is beautiful at any time of day, but a post-dinner stroll will reward you with the most vivid pink and orange skies as the sun rolls behind the horizon. It’s a great dog walk, too, as long as you keep your pups on the lead when on cliff path.

Go crabbing off the harbour wall

Pick up a bucket and line and wait for high tide to do a spot of crabbing off the harbour wall. This is a fun activity for kids and adults alike, and you may choose to make it a competition of who can catch the biggest! When you’re done, safely return your crabs to the ocean and reward the family with an ice cream from one of the nearby parlours.
