Welcome back to Secret Season, our series exploring Cornwall’s best-kept secrets which are revealed in the quieter months. This time, we’re visiting Mousehole, a tiny fishing village known for its bobbing boats, glassy water and winding streets lined with former fishermen’s cottages.
Discover:
On arrival, Mousehole is exceptionally peaceful – it’s early morning, and this fishing village is slow to rise. Only a handful of locals are dotted along the harbour walls, including a painter capturing the morning light, a local fisherman anchoring his boat after a night out to sea, and a couple of folk hopping on The Mousehole – the tiny, regular bus to Penzance.
Yet once we start wandering the winding, narrow streets, we find tiny pockets of warmth and ambience in the delis, pubs and galleries offering shelter from the chilly winter weather.
To the left of the harbour you’ll find a sea pool, ideal for a brisk dip if you’re up for the chill. The sheltered waters offer a safe spot to revitalise no matter the weather before warming up with a hot drink.
Browse the works of local artists inspired by Mousehole’s rich landscapes and seascapes at The Mowzer Gallery and Tyler Gallery.
Bring along a watercolour set (or purchase from one of Penzance’s art shops) and have a go at painting the landscape yourself.
Just a short bus ride away, Penzance offers its own wintery charm. Explore the quirky town centre with a range of independent shops, cafes and galleries, or take a stroll along the promenade. The Jubilee Pool outdoor lido is open for cold water club on Wednesday and Friday mornings between 8:30 – 10 am, and for winter events such as monthly full moon swims, a winter solstice sunrise swim, Christmas Eve dip and New Years Day dip.
Wander Mousehole’s independent shops for treasures you won’t find anywhere else.
