Welcome back to Secret Season, where we venture into Cornwall’s coastal towns and villages during the quieter months to uncover their lesser-known secrets. This time, we’re in the classically Cornish fishing village of Port Isaac to discover lobster pot Christmas trees, tiny cliffside art studios and a pod of dolphins.
Although beautiful in the summer months due to its glossy blue harbour and surrounding coast path, Port Isaac is a destination that inspires cosy seasonal feelings. Although quiet, this sleepy village has a festive charm in the run up to Christmas that will give even the most Grinch-like a warm feeling. From the iconic lobster pot Christmas tree, Christmas wreaths hung on pub doors, to snowflakes and fairy lights in shop windows, this tiny village takes on a festive sparkle. If you time your stay right for 2025, you can join the annual Christmas light switch on, which includes a lantern procession, carol singing, mulled wine and a community feel.
Port Isaac wakes up slowly in the off-season, so enjoy a lie in rather than expecting an early coffee. Dawn risers will be joined only by dedicated carpenters taking care of the look and upkeep of historic buildings. The harbour is largely empty this time of year, with most boats either out fishing or sheltered elsewhere for the season.
But by 11 a.m., coffee is brewing, breakfasts are being plated, the shops are ready to welcome visitors, and day trippers and walkers are enjoying a slow stroll through the village.
Things to see
Breathe in as you meander through Squeezy Belly Lane, one of the narrowest streets in the UK.
Spot the large historic anchor by the harbour, a reminder of Port Isaac’s seafaring heritage.
If you’re an early riser, start your day with a coastal walk. You’ll have the clifftops to yourself, and you may even spot dolphins. We were lucky enough to encounter a pod of common dolphins hunting for breakfast.
A short walk away, Port Gaverne offers a secluded cove for peaceful beach walks and sea glass hunting. Cosy up in Port Gaverne Hotel & Restaurant, where you can enjoy a traditional pub meal.
