Come at high tide and you’ll find the four golden sandy beaches of Tregantle, Sharrow Point, Freathy and Tregonhawke backed by sheer cliffs.
There’s activities for all here when staying in one of our self-catering holiday cottages in Whitsand Bay. Most recently home to divers who come to visit the HMS Scylla, an ex-naval frigate sunk in 2004 to form an artificial reef. It attracts fascinating sea life, and as a result the rock pools onshore harbour interesting visitors too. Check the swell direction if you’re a keen surfer – Whitsand could be a go and is the only surfing beach on the south coast for a good 50 miles.
Close to Whitsand lie the fishing villages of Polperro and Looe – ideal starting points to explore this part of Cornwall with a range of walks along the South West Coast Path for all abilities. Prefer your fun with a club and golf ball in hand? Holiday and serious golfers should make their way to the 18-hole golf course.
RNLI lifeguards patrol certain areas of the beach during peak seasons.
Perched high on the cliffs at ‘The View’ you’ll find a relaxed approach to simple good food with views as far west to Goonhilly on the Lizard. You’ll also find good views from the Cliff Top café, or head down the path to the bottom of Tregonhawke Cliff for the seasonal Eddystone Café, serving all day breakfasts, lunchtime specials and the best chips for miles around.
Whitsand Beach is a dog friendly beach, and with 3 miles of sand to play on you’ll easily be able to tire your best friend out. Don’t forget that dogs are also welcome on the entire 630-mile stretch of the South West Coast Path.
Whitsand Bay is flanked by steep cliffs and access can be tricky. There are a four access points at Tregantle, Sharrow Point, Freathy and Tregonhawke but all are steep and unsuitable for wheel chairs or push chairs.
