Situated on an unspoilt stretch of coast, Praa Sands is one of the best beaches in Cornwall to enjoy a self-catering holiday.
There’s something charmingly simplistic about Praa Sands. A long stretch of white beach with a cafe, surf school and a classic seaside shop selling buckets and spades.
Situated in Mount’s Bay, which extends from Lizard Point to Gwennap Head, this coastal village nestles between the picturesque fishing village of Porthleven and a series of secluded beaches at Prussia Cove. Part of a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Praa Sands is famous for its mile-long sandy beach.
A sweeping crescent beach, Praa Sands is popular with families for building sand castles and surfers for its large waves. The shallow waters, along with the swells, make for a perfect playground for all surfing abilities. Located on the beach, Global Boarders Surf School offer surfing lessons for all abilities as well as equipment hire.
Stretching from Hoe Point in the west to Rinsey Head in the east, the beach is dotted with hidden rockpools to explore. Near Hoe Point you will find Folly Rocks; a site of special scientific interest noted for its geological aspects including granite porphyry.
This is a romantic stretch of coast with dramatic scenery. West of Praa Sands lies Kenneggy Cove which can be accessed from a clifftop footpath at low-tide. Further along the south west coast path, discover a sheltered and secluded inlet called Prussia Cove. Once the haunt of John Carter, Cornwall’s most notorious smuggler, Prussia Cove is a romantic spot to explore hidden beaches. To the east of Praa Sands is the high cliff scenery of Rinsey Head and Trewavas Head. Impressive views can be soaked-up while walking along the coastal path with engine houses standing proud on the headland.
Praa Sands is perfectly located for visiting neighbouring villages including Porthleven – a foodie destination with Rick Stein’s latest restaurant. The harbour is also home to the popular Amelies, Kota and The Square. Explore west Cornwall’s greatest treasures with Land’s End, the Lizard and St Michael’s Mount on your door step.
On the beach front enjoy panoramic sea views as you relax with a coffee, a glass of wine or something to eat at The Beachcomber Cafe or Sandbar restaurant. Porthleven is only a 10-minute drive from Praa Sands, where you can experience Cornwall’s exciting food scene. Taste the ocean at Kota, The Square or Amelies.
A seasonal dog ban is in place on Praa Sands beach. In the summer months, dogs can stretch their legs in the morning and early evening, while in the winter dogs can enjoy the one mile stretch all day long. The flat beach and shallow waters offer the perfect playground for your canine friend.
A flat one-mile stretch of golden sands, Praa Sands beach is perfect for the whole family. Small children can play in the sand while parents and grandparents will love the easy accessibility to the beach and restaurants.
