Best thing about

The sustainable, warm and characterful interiors, designed by Interior Design Masters winner Banjo Beale.

The Details

  • Location

Winnow is a four bedroomed, grass roofed eco-retreat, situated just moments from the shorefront of Watergate bay. It has been redesigned by Interior Design Masters season 3 winner Banjo Beale as the winning prize contract for the show. The retreat has been transformed with sustainability at its heart, using a mix of vintage and reclaimed furniture, along with natural textures and recycled fabrics. Banjo has created a warm, comfortable and light filled space with a natural colour palette and texture story, inspired by the wild Atlantic coast, craggy clay cliffs, wildflowers and sandy beaches. His aim was to create a “little ray of sunshine”, where guests feel a summer glow from winter to summer, and where the outside has been bought in.

Banjo was known on the show to create a character who he imagined in each of his designs, and Winnow is no exception. Winnow's characters are the 'cool parents' of a childhood friend, an artist and a marine biologist who travel the world, collecting art and ephemera, and always land back in Watergate Bay in their large seaside abode, where their children, grandchildren and dogs reunite, sharing seafood feasts at long tables and reading in pillowy armchairs and daybeds.

To find out more about the story behind the interiors and the redesign process, read our interview with Banjo here.

    Where is it?

Winnow is part of the Village, a development which blends into the cliffside overlooking Watergate bay.

The beat of your heart in the surf, the taste of fried fish and juicy burgers, the sea salt on your skin, the sight of people dotted about, lively and smiling, in and out of the topaz blue sea. It's all part and parcel of Watergate bay, the adrenalin junkie's paradise which embodies the spirit of the North Cornwall coast.

Scarlet sunsets set the sky alight as you dine in the swanky beachfront eateries or sip a warming hot chocolate on the sand. Watergate's two miles of sand are popular with families, couples and dogs alongside surfers and thrill seekers. Stride out on a long ramble or short jaunt along the coast path, with nearby walks to Newquay's seven bays or Mawgan Porth.

Plunge into watersports lessons with Wavehunters, where you can try your hand at surfing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and kite surfing. The beach is exposed to incoming swell from the Atlantic, making it an excellent place for water activities.

The lively atmosphere at Watergate is as constant as the tides, with vibrant music festivals and surf competitions running throughout the year.

Guest Reviews

"This is a great property in a great location albeit a steep walk back from the beach but that didn't bother us or the children. The decor is unique and a little quirky but lent itself to the Cornwall country vibe. We all agreed it's a special place and it rendered some great memories for our family."

"The property was even better than the pictures. It was a great place to spend a week with the family. We will definitely be coming back."

"The property is in the perfect location for the beach. The house is a great space for a family holiday and we appreciated the outside warm showers to rinse the sand off before heading into the house."

"We had a wonderful stay at Winnow. The setting was beautiful especially being so close to the costal path so you could watch sunset from the cliff top! Winnow was perfect for us 2 grandparents, 2 adults, 3 kids and 2 dogs! Plenty of room and the perfect place to spend some much needed family time. We will be back!

"We had a great stay at Winnow celebrating my daughter's 21st birthday. The facilities were great and there was plenty of space for 8 adults and 2 springer spaniels. The kitchen and island were great for preparing meals and we were able to have a great murder mystery dinner party around the big dining table. Having stayed at the hotel when our family was much younger, this apartment was a much better place for a group of young adults with parents and grandparents. Beach retreats were great with communication and even called us as soon as the apartment was ready so we didn’t have to wait until 5pm! Thank you."

"An amazing place to stay! We came for my Dad’s 70th and had a great time. The house is stunning and the views are incredible. There are a few cafes and restaurants a 5-minute walk away at Watergate Bay. Cubs Coffee is fab, and the cream tea at Watergate Bay Hotel was 10/10. Also just a short drive from Padstow which has lots of little shops and food places. The house was as described. Very warm, has plenty of room, is super clean and is a great place to chill and overlook the sea. We would definitely come back here!"
