Six retreats for storm watching in Cornwall

Waves whipped up by the wind, rainbow spray flying over harbour walls, crashing swell and whistling gales. Storm watching in Cornwall is a spectacle of the ocean’s unruly power, and watching it is a humbling experience: all there is to do is stand, mesmerised, at how little control we have over nature’s forces.

We’ve chosen six retreats perfect for storm watching, all situated in positions along the Cornish coast that get dramatic swells during stormy weather. Whether you’d prefer a windswept coastal walk watching the waves form far out to sea or would rather recline back in a sea-view hot tub hearing the sounds of the crashing sea below, book a winter stay this year and witness nature at its wildest.

Fancy staying in a holiday retreat with a log burner? Check out our cottages with a log burner for a cosy getaway.

Please note: When storm watching, always stay safe. Don’t close to the water, as waves can unexpectedly increase in size, and always avoid cliff edges and harbour walls during storms.

Toms Cottage, Porthleven – sleeps 2

In stormy weather, Porthleven showcases some of the unruliest seas. The Atlantic swell crashes over the harbour wall and clock tower, creating spectacular scenes which have featured on international news. Tom’s Cottage is situated just 500 metres from the harbour, so you will be able to dash out of the front door as soon as you hear the storm brewing and witness its dramatic display.

For a more panoramic view, take a walk along the coastal path to Looe, where you can see the waves far out to sea. Or, cosy up in the Ship Inn, a traditional pub directly overlooking the harbour where you can watch the waves from the warmth of inside, next to a roaring fire and with a drink in hand.

The Liner, Falmouth – sleeps 2-8

With uninterrupted front row views of Gyllyngvase beach and the expanse of ocean from Pendennis Castle across to the Helford passage, our apartments at The Liner are perfect for watching the storm from the comfort of your own seafront balcony. Simply grab a hot drink and sit back with a blanket as the skies darken and the sea comes to life.

Check out more of what Falmouth has to offer by staying in one of our bespoke retreats in Falmouth.

Chimneys, Mousehole- sleeps 6

Mousehole is a picture book village in the summer months, with a gentle swell and sheltered harbour. However, when a storm hits, the surrounding ocean becomes wild and the harbour mouth must be boarded up by a gate to block the impact of the waves. The swell has been seen to surge over the harbour wall in the past, crashing onto the sheltered sandy harbour cove and even up onto the car park in previous years. Our retreat Chimneys overlooks the harbour and adjacent rocky beach, the perfect spot for watching stormy seas.

By the sea, Newquay- sleeps 10

Newquay is known for its world class surf and seven beaches and is a destination people flock to throughout the year to catch a wave. Being on the north Cornish coast, it often gets dramatic swells. The most famous is the cribbar, a huge wave just off Fistral headland. By The Sea is a glass-fronted property perched on the edge of the cliff overlooking the bay, where you can gaze down at the waves from above. Or, head out on a coastal walk around the headland and watch the few pro surfers attempt to catch the cribbar.

The Strand, Porth – sleeps 6-8

The Strand is perfectly situated just a short walk away from Porth Island, where at mid-tide you can see the blow hole shoot rainbow sprays of water. Wrap up warm and cross the beach then head up onto the island, where you will cross a unique bridge over the stormy waters and experience panoramic views of the ocean expanse. From the Strand properties’ balconies, you can see a glimmer of the sea, a great indicator of when the swell is surging.

Far Horizon, Downderry – sleeps 8

Finally, for a laid back approach to watching the storm, hop in the ocean front hot tub at Far Horizon, which sits directly above the expanse of sea below. Lay back in the bubbles and settle under the stars for an evening of wave watching with a glass of wine in hand.

Staff pick of the month: Wonderwall, Hayle

Our new series, Staff pick of the month, asks members of the team about their favourite Beach Retreats property. This month we speak to Brand Marketing Manager, Lowenna Logue. Lowenna is a lover of all things Cornwall, and in her free time you’ll find her trailing the coast path, seeking out new beaches and taking photos for her Instagram account, @cornwall_lover.

Her chosen retreat right now is Wonderwall, an eco beach house new to our books which is set in the Upton Towans area of Hayle.

What is it you like most about this property?

Its unique design and interiors as well as its green credentials – the development is made with locally sourced materials and designed to blend in to the surrounding environment. The large floor to ceiling windows allow the light to flood in onto the pastel colours used throughout. I especially like the second bedroom with the four poster bed and tall window.

Fancy staying in a holiday retreat with a log burner? Check out our cottages with a log burner for a cosy getaway.

What will be your favourite part of the day when staying at this retreat?

The evening. It has the perfect garden for a family BBQ and get together. My nieces can run and play while the adults relax at the table close to the fire with a bottle of wine. There is also a pizza oven that will really go down a treat. When outside, with the lights turned on at dusk, Wonderwall looks so beautiful.

What is it that you like about the local area?

Wonderwall is just a short walk from Gwithian and Godrevy, here the beaches have plenty of space, backed by sand dunes. I love the walk past Godrevy lighthouse and up around the cliffs where you can often watch seals bathing and playing below. There is an ice cream van that parks here in the summer, right at the end of the walk. It’s a great day out for everyone. The beach itself is fantastic for watersports and exploring the dunes.

Explore more of Hayle, and check out our other holiday properties in Hayle.

Is there a particular restaurant in the area that you would choose to eat at?

Lula Shack. It is right on the beach. I dined here last year and it was unforgettable. The seating is mostly outside, there was a DJ playing, we ordered some seafood and had a fantastic evening. The vibe was very relaxed, we didn’t want to leave. I highly recommend the cajun crab claws from the fire pit or the fluffy pancakes at breakfast. Visit at high tide for a better experience.

Discover the best places to eat out in Hayle and explore the vibrant food scene and local flavours that this coastal town has to offer.

Can you catch a good sunset or sunrise here?

As Hayle is on the North coast of Cornwall, it benefits from beautiful sunsets. One of my favourite pastimes on a summer’s evening is to head to the waterfront with a cool drink in hand to watch the sun go down.

What would you say is a must-see or do in this area?

If travelling with your family, catch the train to St Ives. It is one of the most scenic train routes in the UK – it winds around the cliff edge passing Carbis Bay, giving you breathtaking views. Grab a pasty and an ice cream (watch out for pesky seagulls) and then walk the coast path back or jump on the train again.

Wonderwall sleeps seven guests and has availability for 2022, click here to find out more.

Experiencing Skyfall

“So close to the beach that you can hear the fizzle of water as it drags back over the pebbles”.

The Beach Retreats team recently stayed at our newest penthouse apartment overlooking Gyllyngvase beach in Falmouth – Skyfall. Hear from our Content Coordinator Lowenna Merritt on how we got on.

Visiting Cornwall for a workcation? Have a look at our holiday lets perfect for extended stays and working.

When I was offered an overnight stay at Skyfall, I jumped at the opportunity. Being the jewel in the crown of the brand-new The Liner development in Falmouth, this two-story penthouse apartment has been the talk of the town since it was completed this year. Sitting proudly in a prime position at The Liner, it gazes down on the beach below, and the sky reflects in its large, duplex windows. The Liner itself was designed and inspired by a classic cruise liner, and thus Skyfall is the bow of the ship, a sight to behold from the surrounding streets below.

Check out more of what Falmouth has to offer by staying in one of our other bespoke retreats in Falmouth.

Arriving at this development, I just couldn’t wait to get inside. The calm shoreline of Gylly beach is already a treat for the eyes, so I just knew that the view from above would be even better. The lift took me up to the fifth floor, where I stepped into the hallway, greeted by the haze of blue sea beyond the windows.

This open plan living, dining and kitchen space was everything I imagined and more. Smooth wooden floorboards, a huge comfy sofa, remote control fireplace, leafy green plants, marble effect worktops and of course, the expanse of ocean and sky through the floor to ceiling windows that grasps your attention from the get-go.

The first thing I did was step out onto the large balcony and simply soak it all up. The smell of the sea air, slightly tinged by the tang of seaweed, the sound of the gentle waves murmuring and the hum of beachgoers below, and of course, the irresistible turquoise moana which dominates the view, a vista stretching from Pendennis castle on the left to the distant cliffs of the Helford passage on the right.

So close to the beach that you can hear the fizzle of water as it drags back over the pebbles, yet simultaneously so high up in the sky that you have a complete sense of seclusion and privacy is a truly special feeling. As the evening sun began to paint the sky with softer tones of pink, we opened a bottle of wine and enjoyed a glass looking out towards the sea, before preparing dinner.

Gylly Beach Café is directly below The Liner and is an excellent option for an evening bite, but we couldn’t drag ourselves away from the comfort of this apartment.

Prawn linguine, white wine, olives and a dazzling sea view, can you ask for anything more? After dinner, as sunset approached, the sky was slowly warming in colour, so we took a blanket and dessert onto the balcony to watch it unfold. Gyllyngvase beach is on the south coast, so it benefits from beautiful sunrises directly over its horizons, whilst the sun sets to the east, in the distance behind its tropical gardens. However, as Skyfall benefits from a 270 degree balcony wrapping around the front and side of the apartment, the vivid orange of the sunset is still visible from the other side. Having a space like this to watch the sun go down was truly a unique experience. Curled up in a blanket, we had all the comfort and warmth of an evening in, yet could still enjoy the uninterrupted expanse of sky perform its nightly display of colour and light.

We sat outside until the sky had completely darkened, the moonlight gently lighting up the sea. Crawling into bed after an evening in the fresh sea air made the bedroom feel even more cosy. We all fell asleep to the distinct sound of the waves, something I don’t think I have ever experienced before.

In the morning, we awoke early, grabbed a towel and swimwear and headed straight down to the beach for a dip. The Liner is literally footsteps from the sand, so there’s no need to even get changed on the way back from the beach, just wrap up in a towel and walk barefoot. At just gone seven in the morning, the beach was fairly quiet except for the occasional fellow swimmer. The water felt cold at first, but as soon as I dived under I felt wholly refreshed, and delighted in this natural way of waking up. Who needs a morning coffee anyway?

Heading back to the apartment from the beach took seconds, and I jumped straight in the shower before taking breakfast out onto the balcony. That morning could not have been more blissful; so simple yet so perfect.

Skyfall is a retreat that you won’t want to leave. It embodies that beach feeling, an irresistible pull towards the ocean which leaves you unable to take your eyes off the view.

Visiting Cornwall for a romantic adventure? Check out our romantic cottages.

Strand Line, Porthcothan, sleeps 4

If it’s good enough to be featured in the stylish Coast magazine, then it’s definitely going to look good on your Insta feed. Most of the interior design that features in this cosy cabin is upcycled from materials found on nearby beaches, so it makes a great story too. Don’t worry, there’s no shortage of mod cons fused with the rustic feel, including a pod coffee machine, digital TV and a SONOS sound bar.

The Meadow, Whitsand Bay, sleeps 4

What this cosy and petite ‘beach hut’ styled cabin lacks in size, it more than makes up for with its massive views across the glittering expanse of Whitsand Bay and Rame Head. With double glass doors opening out from the living room to the sea-facing garden, you don’t even have to leave the comfort of the log fire to snap perfect pictures of the scenery. However, when the sun shines, you’ll no doubt want to enjoy the ocean views and briny air from the decking or the beach.

The Tower, Praa Sands, sleeps 8

You’ll feel like royalty staying in this fairy tale castle, perched on the cliff tops overlooking Mounts Bay. Grade II-listed and built as a retreat for a marine biologist in 1775, it’s also rumoured to have been a hideout for one of Cornwall’s most famous smugglers – John Cater, a.k.a. the King of Prussia. The opulent interior and the commanding seascapes rival for attention, but the finest 360-degree views can be captured from the turrets of your private terrace.

Ivy Cottage, Watergate Bay, sleeps 10

One of the most stunning surf beaches in Cornwall, the two-mile stretch of Watergate Bay is close to our hearts and high on the list of Cornwall’s top Instagram beaches. So it goes without saying that the pictures of you posing with surfboards or sipping cocktails in the swanky venue of the Beach Hut will look great on your profile. Footsteps from the enviable beach life, make yourself at home in a traditional family cottage that’s been revamped into a luxury coastal retreat, where you can hunker by the fire and let the kids run wild in the paddock.

Oakfield, Widemouth Bay, sleeps 6

Sink into the hot tub and peer over rolling countryside to the ocean, and you’ll feel so relaxed that your social media feed will probably be the last thing on your mind. However, if you want to stoke your status with idyllic images, there’s plenty of opportunity from this designer retreat in a peaceful Cornish hamlet. It’s a challenging 30-40 minute stomp to reach the rugged beach of Crackington Haven, or a swift 10 minutes by car. However, with French doors to fling open in almost every room, you can let the outside in and clap your eyes on the ocean hues with no effort whatsoever.

Find out more about Oakfield.

Leeward House, St Agnes, sleeps 7

Staying here will make you feel more like you’re in a luxurious tree house than a beach retreat. Yet just 600-metres from the shoreline of Trevaunance cove, you can peer through the canopies to glimpse the Atlantic rollers on the doorstep. A serene location, with floor-to-ceiling windows, a hot tub on the decking and plenty of mod cons housed in the designer space, you’ll be spoilt for choice for striking images to fill your Insta feed.

Weekend retreat in Cawsand

Cawsand

CawsandLocal blogger Hayley Spurway and her family cast away to Cawsand for a weekend…

Following the directions along narrow, winding streets to reach The Penthouse 4 The Bay, you’d be forgiven for thinking that you might end up driving straight into the sea. It’s only just before you hit the shoreline that you turn into an underground parking lot beneath a brand new complex of beachside apartments: one of which was our weekend pad.

Fancy staying in a holiday retreat with a hot tub? Check out our cottages with a hot tub for a relaxing getaway.

SWANKY BEACH PAD

While the boys’ jaws dropped at the technical bling and bunk beds – with a PS4, bedside screens and all the gadgets they’re not allowed at home – I was stunned by the eye-popping views and our proximity to the big blue and. A serene ocean-scape flooded through every window, with a pop-out balcony in my penthouse suite, where I could soak up said views and listen to the meditative echo of the waves in a private sanctuary, squirrelled away from the rest of the house. I even had control of my own Sonos sound system, so with excitement levels running high and the boys already commandeering the soundtrack downstairs, I cranked up my own tunes, took a deep breath of briny air, and kicked back on the plump cushions scattered on the bed. Bliss.

SEASIDE LIFESTYLE

Ensconced in the coastal lifestyle, our hectic pace of life quickly adjusted to the beat of the ocean and the steady ebb and flow of the tides. We eased open electric blinds to watch the sublime sunrise over Plymouth Sound, where sailing boats crossed the watery border between Devon and Cornwall. Our bare feet padded across the sand and along the cobbled seaside lanes, on the way to buy fresh sourdough bread from The Old Bakery – ready for breakfast after an invigorating sea swim. Skimming stones for the dog to chase, splashing in the shallows and swimming out to sea until the cold water prickled our skin, sparked a hearty appetite for coffee and eggs, served back on our balcony overhanging the sea.

Take a scenic walk through Lynton and Lynmouth, exploring their charming streets, historic landmarks, and breathtaking coastal views in North Devon.

CAR-FREE ADVENTURES

Although we were content to while away hours in our beach pad – playing snakes and ladders and scrabble, and gorging on Cornish cream teas (the ingredients thoughtfully provided by the owners) – it was time to breakout on some family adventures and explore this divine and ‘forgotten corner’ of Cornwall. So, fresh Cornish pasties in hand, and with the dog in tow, we climbed aboard the little Cawsand Ferry, which puttered to and from the beach, right outside our door.

Explore the picturesque village of Cawsand in South Cornwall with Beach Retreats, offering charming cottages and stunning coastal views for a relaxing getaway.

Passing maritime and military landmarks, we crossed the watery border into Devon, tracking a course towards the iconic Smeaton’s Tower – a lighthouse that was originally built to deter sailors from Eddystone Reef, then moved stone by stone Plymouth Hoe in 1884. Climbing the lighthouse tower is just one of the amazing things to do once the ferry moors in Plymouth, and another family favourite is a visit to the largest aquarium in the UK. However, after a ramble along the Barbican, we stepped into the fascinating Mayflower museum, took a twirl along the hoe, and tucked into fish and chips. By then is was already time to hop back on the ferry for a bumpy crossing back to Cawsand, which was swiftly followed by a sundowner at The Bay, basking in the last glimpse of the autumn sunshine.

HOME COMFORTS

Despite a tempting menu at The Bay bar and restaurant, we chose to head back upstairs and make use of the high-spec kitchen in our penthouse. After all, what’s the point in residing in a stylish beach house if you don’t make the most of it? Whether you want to throw a dinner party or cook up a hearty family feast, the kitchen is well equipped for all occasions. And whether you’re cooking, chilling out on the sofa, or sitting at the dinner table, the views from the open-plan living space far outdo those from the restaurant downstairs (even if our food wasn’t as high calibre as the seafood-biased menu being served there).

DOG-FRIENDLY DAYS

The beauty of being able to bring your dog to stay at The Bay is that are so many walks on the doorstep. From October to Easter you can pad straight out onto the dog-friendly sands with your morning coffee, while neighbouring Kingsand beach is paw-friendly year round. Keen for a picturesque Sunday stroll, we made tracks along the South West Coast Path, following chestnut-littered paths beneath woodland canopies, to the Rame Peninsula.

With the trail never veering more than a pebble’s throw from the water, we peeped through the autumn leaves to sailing boats on Plymouth Sound, before emerging at the historic Penlee Battery. This made the perfect spot for a picnic, while the kids made the most of nature’s playground, clambering on craggy rocks where fishermen lured Sunday lunch onto their lines. The coast path continues all the way to the chapel perched on the tip of Rame Head, or you can follow a circular route back to Kingsand.

SURF’S UP

Staying at The Bay, there’s no need for a car to enjoy plenty of family adventures by ferry and foot. However, the whisper of a wave on nearby Whitsand Bay was enough to nudge us to start the engine, and explore the sweeping expanse of coastline wrapping its way back towards south Cornwall. Winding along mile-upon-mile of wave-lashed coastline, it makes an epic road trip through a landscape that echoes with history and legend. It’s thought that Freathy Cliffs are still haunted by the ghost of a smuggler named Silas Finn, who betrayed his friends to save himself from the authorities.

Sitting beneath the cliffs at Eddystone Beach Café, we watched the surfers who now flock to this coastline in place of the smugglers and seafarers of days gone by. It’s the juxtaposition of past and present – the meeting of a rich heritage and state-of-the-art living – that makes this ‘forgotten corner’ of Cornwall so magical. And as the sun went down on our weekend away, we felt relaxed and rejuvenated, having been immersed in the history and beauty of Cornwall, all from the comfort of a contemporary beach house.

Cornwall’s most Instagrammable locations

We predict that these Cornish spots will be popping up on our feeds…

Last year it was Pedn Vounder and Kynance Cove that captured the Insta crowds and went viral on social media. So what are the most Instagrammable locations of Cornwall in 2019?

Port Isaac

The home of Doc Martin is a picture-postcard Cornish village flaunting cobbled streets, cream tea cafés and sublime sea views. We’re so used to seeing it on our TV screens that we half expect the Doc to come dashing down the winding streets to the harbour, where fishing boats putter in to deliver fresh catch to Nathan Outlaw’s restaurants. With wild Cornish cliffs that yawn in each direction, it’s little wonder that the Doc chose to live here, and less wonder that we’re so fixated by his appearance on our TV screens – who knows if it’s Doc Martin or Port Isaac that’s the real star of the show.

Bedruthan Steps

Dubbed Britain’s equivalent of Australia’s Twelve Apostles, us mere mortals are dwarfed by the towering rock stacks rising from the sands of this craggy cove north of Newquay. Stand atop the cliffs and you can watch the waves carving the granite turrets, said to be the stepping-stones of a legendary giant. Or wait for low tide and descend the cliff steps to pad along the white sands, peering down into the rock pools and up to the peaks of these barnacle-clad skyscrapers. Don’t be content with taking in the view from the coast path with the rest of the camera-wielding visitors, plug on along the coast path to Park Head, passing ancient burial mounds and the ruins of a cliff fort, while keeping an eye out for seals and seabirds.

Wheal Coates

Climb the rusty-red backs of the cliffs from Chapel Porth beach, to reach this iconic engine house that casts a shadow over the wild Atlantic waves. As you explore the coast path you’re setting foot in some of Cornwall’s richest mining history, while below the pumping surf breaks are known as the legendary ‘Badlands’. While the waves aren’t the territory of beginners, when you descend the pristine cove of Chapel Porth, you’ll discover the perfect spot for rock-pooling as the tide ebbs, and make sure you stop for a famous hedgehog ice cream in the National Trust car park.

Tintagel

Perched atop a sea-lashed promontory and swathed in Arthurian legend, Tintagel Castle has been a crowd-puller ever since tourism came to Cornwall. With its magnificent ruins and immense bronze statue of King Arthur looking out to sea, we expect the fortress to be high on our social media scrolls when it re-opens this summer, following the construction of a new footbridge. Touted as the birthplace of King Arthur, it’s impossible not to get swept away by local myths as you listen to your echo in the eerie Merlin’s Cave and step foot in the remains of a majestic fortress and a prosperous Dark Age settlement.

Jubilee Pool, Penzance

Cornwall’s art-deco lido has graced the screens of our social media feeds ever since it was renovated after storm damage in 2014. One of the world’s most scenic lidos, its eye-catching design and turquoise waters are hemmed by Mounts Bay. Re-opening again this summer after the development of a geo-thermal project, an area of the pool will be heated to a steaming 35C later in the year – so it’ll no longer be the territory of just hardy cold-water swimmers. In fact, you don’t even have to take a dip to enjoy the lido, simply bask on the terrace or take a seat in the year-round café and soak up the views.

Holywell Bay

Having scored a starring role in the BBC’s recent Poldark hit, the breath-taking beauty of Holywell Bay needs little introduction. As soon as you clap eyes on the giant sand dunes and the twin peaks of Gull rock, you can imagine Ross Poldark galloping along the shoreline, searching for Demelza wistfully picking sea pinks on the cliff tops. Despite is fame, Holywell still keeps the crowds at bay, and makes the perfect beach for hitting the surf, collecting shells and exploring the sea caves in search of the ‘holy well’. You can also follow the coast path to Kelsey Head to spot seals and seabirds.

Huer’s Hut, Newquay

In the 19th century the town ‘huer’ would stand in this little stone hut on Towan Headland, crying, “Heva, Heva”, to alert the fishermen when shoals of pilchards were spotted in Newquay Bay. Having been restored in recent years to ensure Newquay’s history and heritage is not forgotten, this little whitewashed hut is a great spot to step back in time, gawp at the panoramic coastal views and see if you can spot shoals of dolphins of mackerel coming into the bay.
